Major upgrades ahead at Tahko Mountain

A brand-new, modern six-seater chairlift will be built on Tahko’s front slopes in summer 2026 — and that’s just the beginning. A €14 million investment will also boost snow reliability and upgrade both snowmaking and slope lighting across the area.

A smoother (and faster) trip to the top

The old anchor lifts on Tahko’s front slopes will be replaced in summer 2026 with a new six-seater chairlift. The upgrade boosts lift capacity along the line by a third, making the ride up the mountain smoother and quicker.

The new lift will carry up to 3,200 skiers per hour to the top. There will also be a dedicated storage hall built at the upper station, making moving between slopes easier.

“This new lift is a major step forward for Tahko. It improves the visitor experience, increases capacity, and supports tourism across the entire region,” says Pasi Martikainen, Business Director at Tahko Mountain.

The winter season will start in November

The winter season will start in November

The new lift will be ready for the 2026–2027 season. Another major upgrade arriving that same winter is the use of stored snow, which will allow us to open the slopes as early as November.

“Stored snow means we can open the season at a set time each year, giving certainty for skiers and for event organisers. It also reduces the need for snowmaking, which lowers both water and energy use. It’s a responsible way to make sure winter at Tahko starts on schedule,” says Lauri Suutarinen, CEO of Huippupaikat Oy.

A three-year development project

The new lift is part of a wider €14 million investment that also includes upgrades to the snowmaking system and slope lighting. The project is being carried out by Huippupaikat Oy (SkiOne) between 2025 and 2027, with co-funding from the European Regional Development Fund as part of the Renewing and Competent Finland 2021–2027 regional and structural policy program.

Construction timeline

  • Preparatory earthworks: autumn 2025
  • Lift construction: summer 2026
  • Opening: November 2026

Location

  • Next to Tirol, replacing the current anchor lift.

Capacity

  • 3,200 people per hour (current anchor lift: 2,400 people per hour)

Upper station improvements

  • The upper station will be raised and a new storage hall for the lift chairs will be built.

Sustainable lighting and snow making

Sustainable lighting and snow making

As part of our development project, we’re modernising the snowmaking system, introducing stored snow, and upgrading to energy-efficient LED lighting, which has already been installed on selected slopes in 2024. All of this supports Tahko’s broader sustainability goals.

The new lift is only one chapter in Tahko’s growth story. In recent years, the area has seen major investment in accommodation, services, and infrastructure, and development is set to continue.

“It’s exciting to help move Tahko forward. I’m looking forward to everything that comes next,” says Suutarinen.

This project is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund as part of the Renewing and Skilled Finland 2021–2027 EU regional and structural policy programme.
